I forgot to take pictures of these when I finished the first half. Then I finished another 5 and it became 10 minis. I will be switching to Harlequins from here for a bit.

Hot on the heels of the Normandy, I start the next project, Aeldari. This is a mix of Striking Scorpions and Howling Banshees. A spin off of the Harlequins I just finished. I started this off with the first 5 Striking Scorpions.

This time, we have a very saturated scheme. All the colours, even the golds, are very vibrant, almost to the point of a comic book kind of scheme. I have not painting gold without my standard silver highlight in a very long time. Just letting different golds highlight each other makes them pop in such a natural and clean way. I think without the full saturation of the other colours, letting the golds stay gold wouldn’t work as well. This is going to be a very pretty number of Aspect Warriors.

Could this be it? The Normandy is complete? The detailing ended up being the red windows along the middle of the hull and the black lines all across the hull to make it looks like the ship has armour panels. I tried to slightly shade within those panels to make them look a bit 3D rather than lines I painted on after blocking in the main colours.

I added intake ports on the top and bottom of the ship, I assume they are some kind of intake port. Since they aren’t part of the printed model, I needed to paint them on freehand. Though I made a stencil to use for each one to make them as similar as possible. Hopefully they come out a bit 3D looking.

The stand is another 3D printed piece with a magnet in it. I painted it black so it might blend in with space backgrounds.

I was asked to add some lettering to the engines for some last details. Now I will be sealing this model for protection and sending it to its forever home.

The next step on the Normandy is in progress. I have finally gotten the yellow strips to where I want them. I spent a painting session adding in the red squares for the window lights. I will be brightening the windows to yellow or orange and then bring it back with a few washes. I want the red glow to be much darker and the pin pricks of light to really stand out.

This is one of the larger models I have gotten the chance to work with. First rounds of cleaning was a lot of sanding and adding a bit of filler to get those striations as minimal as I can. After that, I primed the model in black and white, in generally the areas I wanted. There are a lot of angles in the design of the colour scheme for the Normandy, so masking was necessary. I did the black first, so now I’m masking that to do the white.

The scheme with the yellow splashes has more of a warmer white, so I will be going for that when I build up the layers. I have to admit, I made a mistake in doing the yellow strip in the front. It’s supposed to zig and zag, but I only made it zag. I will have it fixed after I finish the white.

They’re all done, done I say! Pictures needed to be done on the kitchen table because I don’t have enough room for all of them on my desk. There’s only like 50 or 60 minis in the commission, but all the magnetized options really increased the time it took by quite a bit! But I didn’t do the assembly on this one. All the basework was made of chunks of plastic Eldar flooring. Almost all the models have been magnetized and/or converted in some way. The bikes and Star Weavers are on ball magnets so you can rotate them as you want.

I put on all the riders for the vehicles and bikes. Most of them are not glued on or they are magnetized to keep them in place. The windows on the Star Weavers haven’t been glued on, but they can still show off the pilot I painted on the inside. Part of the challenge in painting the diamond design in different sizes is to make the layout relatively consistent even though they are being painted on different sized models. I really wanted there to be a center column of diamonds to anchor the design across all the models. I think it came out fantastic.

For all the infantry, it was a combination of diamond and vein designs on their chest, arms, and legs. Since they are orange as well, it looks like they are a lava or fire scheme. I felt like the scheme needed a small pop of blue and you can see traces of it on the different models. Either as a weapon and grenades, the baby blue colour really comes out and pops against the black and orange of the rest of the model. Some of the models have cloaks and I made them a dark blue and grey to add contrast against the orange. Those ones, I think, get more depth to their black as a result. Even though there are a few varieties to the same scheme in the army, the models are so dynamic and unique, I think it would have looked out of place if the models were too “same-y”.

The characters are pretty unique. A bunch of them are converted and look great. You can see a couple of them were kitbashed.

Look at all those extra arms to equip the troupers how you want!

The rest of the commission is arms. All the arms of the Harlequin troupers. I don’t know what anything is called, but there is a variety of weapons for the arms. Swords, guns, hand, all the things for a 40k unit. Only like 3 more baggies of these.

The last characters are done for this army! A couple of these are converted wonderfully and make for great alternatives for the heroes.

Each of the Shadowseers have been quite different and I think this one is actually the closest to the original model kit.

The Death Jester was converted so he looks like he’s just about to vault over the rubble. Such an interesting pose! Like the other Death Jester, I gave a leg, and the cloak and cowl the diamonds.

Finally, the show-off Troupe Master/Solitaire. He walks as if he owns the place. The hands are magnetized so he has a selection of weapons and empty hands.

All that’s left are all the arms and weapons for the painted Troupers.
