To finish off the bard survivors, the Female Bard armours are complete. They are matching the green of the green Smog Singer and are clearly ready for a jam session.

This sculpt really appealed to me as soon as I saw it. The casual stance, the goofy face, and the gratuitous violence all came together into such an interesting model. The limited pallet of colours and the blood being such a strong contrast makes this model stand out. Next up will be the female bard armours, but I am looking forward to other narrative sculpts.

The first survivor models I have done for the commission are the male bard armours. They are matching the colours I painted for the Smog Singers. In KDM, the survivors hunt the monsters like the Smog Singers and harvest the corpses for parts to make into armour and weapons to use in the next hunt.

These guys match the red Smog Singer for the main colour. The female armours will feature green from the green Smog Singer. The blue mail will be from the blue Smog Singer and the yellow bits are how I imagine the goop the monsters excrete affect the colour of cloth.

You may not like it, but this is peak lounging physique. The Smog Singers are complete and in trendy RGB fashion.

They may be monsters in Kingdom Death, and should probably be dispatched on sight, but if it weren’t for the existential horror of the setting, I’m sure this trio would be a great group to hang out with. Kingdom Death is having a painting contest at the end of the month and I will be entering what I complete. I’m picking the red Smog Singer, and now I need to pick an armour set mini and a narrative mini. Hopefully, I get them done! The Crimson Croc monster would have been a stronger choice, but I will not be getting something that large done by the end of the month, so I stuck with the Smog Singers.

Unfortunately, I was quite busy this week and couldn’t paint as much as I wanted to. I did make progress on the Smog Singers and have decided on RGB colours as their theme. The smoke, masks, and pustules still need to be detailed. Which model(s) should I paint next?

It was not just building the Black Knight last week, I also made progress on painting a few mer-people. Naturally, KDM mer-people are horrifying creatures that probably go around tickling your feet while you sleep, these ones smoke while doing it too. The scheme will be inspired by Den of Imagination’s work on them, so each will have a different tail colour.

The third one with the smoke out of it’s mouth, that smoke is in the most delicate of situations and I may need to find hardier solutions to get it to stick.

The new Black Knight expansion got released and needed to be added to the project. I painted this model before when it was a resin kit and did not come with a posse. Here we go with round 2.

I must say, the Black Knight is a very cool model, but the pieces do not fit as well together from what I remember last time. The gaps between pieces were unfortunately quite wide, but it’s fixed now.

The rest of the band are all named characters and this part is more for my records, keeping track of who’s who than anything.

The remaining Gambler’s Chest models are pretty much built. I have sealed most of the gaps on the models. There are a lot of gaps in the people katamari the Gambler is holding.

There are so many narrative sculpts in this and they are so cool. Some more NSFW than others, but they all look good. The only model that was a true pain to build was the katamari ball. Pieces has heads of the people overhanging and interlocking with other people pieces. This lead to issues of pieces getting in each other’s way, and some force was needed.

Onward to painting!

The Gambler’s chest is finally in the hands of many backers, including myself. The next commission on the docket is, the miniatures from the Gambler’s chest. The King is one I have done before and Atnas isn’t desired, so will not be included. I am looking forward to more Kingdom Death on this blog as it has been some time since we have been graced with boutique horror.

Can you name the models in this group?

Tower Rex – Spirit Island Board Game Organizer Assembly & Review February 6, 2023

Last year, I discovered the board game Spirit Island that was released in 2017. In Summer 2022, an expansion was then successfully funded on Kickstarter, after which I saw a review of the base game and was instantly intrigued. After playing several games on Tabletop Simulator, I eventually got a physical copy for a Christmas gift and happily played some games.

I found I wanted an insert organizer to arrange all the tokens and minis that come with the game and found one on Etsy, by Tower Rex. It comes as laser cut MDF board with pieces that could pop out. The assembly instructions link didn’t work, but I found it to be really easy to follow just by looking at the pictures on the store page, but there are some notes to consider if you want to try it yourself.

This is the finished components with all the pieces in them. They can largely be dry fit together and will hold. The keyed bits are cut in such a way that they act as springs when fitted together and can be pressure fit instead of glued. I still did end up using PVA glue to reinforce the build.

Assembly

I first separated the pieces to what I roughly thought would be needed for each component.

Card Organizer

The first box I assembled was the card organizer. The base of this box has a hole in it to easily push up and get at any fallen cards and sides with slits to fit the dividers.

Fully assembled, I glued the sides, but not the dividers, so I can customize my card layout.

Component Organizers

These boxes have different sizes to keep track of. This first 4-component tray has both wave and straight edge sides. Be aware, the wavy sides have a divider slot that is slightly further away from the end than the other side’s slot, it is not symmetrical. This is to give the City minis lot slightly more room than the other lots.

The side with the huts on this tray will need more room than the side of the tray to hold the coin energies to be able to properly hold both game components.

Be aware of these next component trays. They are very similar in size, but the narrow ends of the engraved tray are in fact, slightly smaller than the ends of the two blank trays. Therefore, the dividers from on the blank trays and this engraved tray are also different. I needed to do a double take on those.

Complete

All the finished pieces do insert nice and tight in the box the game came in. One of the blank trays sits empty underneath the player token tray that would hold more tokens from the expansion. Then, on top of the token and mini trays you can fit in the Player boards, island board, scenario cards, the instructions, and maps. The lid fits smoothly on with everything already organized for my next play session.

Review

This was an easy kit to put together. I just needed to pop up the pieces and carefully consider which piece of each tray should be put together. Unfortunately, at the time I was putting it together, the link for the assembly instructions did not work, but that did not deter me. The faces of the boards the pieces came on and the faces of the pieces themselves did not have burn marks from the laser cutting process, which I appreciate. My hands also do not have charcoal dust so it was cleaned before shipping (or at least was prepped before cutting to minimize the dust) and this is much appreciated.

I only have the base game, so there is still room to include the additional components if I also get the expansion. The plastic organizers that come with the box originally, don’t really fit everything properly and there weren’t enough spots to separate everything. They even didn’t even leave enough room to easily fit the lid on when done (because everything you have are in baggies and not loose taking up extra space)! This wood organizer insert changes that. The trays snuggly fit into the box in pretty much the above configuration. The city models do mostly need to be stood up to all fit properly though. Looking at it all fit together in the end gives me the warm fuzzies inside. You shouldn’t be flipping this around when transporting or you will get pieces everywhere, but if you can’t help it, you may want to consider keeping them in baggies for finding lids of some kind for the trays.

I would recommend this product.
