Entering my second competition of the year (first was Adepticion 2019 Crystal Brush) the Everchosen Painting Competition from Games Workshop. The first round is done by vote at all participating GW stores. So, I entered my rendition of the Idoneth Deepkin Ahkelian King from Age of Sigmar.

The scheme for the steed was inspired by the colours of Mantis Shrimp. I went for very vibrant blue, red, and green. The King got gold armour, similar to Aquaman Atlantian soldier armour. His weapons were painted bone with maroon shading, and some gloss varnish for that seashell effect.

The part that was different from my norm was having clear resin and water effects. From the start, I wanted some of the mini to be submerged in water, preferably shallow ocean water so I could have that movement of waves and possibly some interesting scenery in the resin.

The rock is, in fact, a painted rock, but the sand underneath was sculpted with filler and then painted. I added waves to the sand for that underwater realism. The bubbles were both intentional and unintentional. I wanted bubbles to form somewhere, I just didn’t expect them to form perfectly from under the rock. Finally, the waves were done with thicker, sculptable water effects. Some parts were done in layers to get the movement of the waves and splashes of the tail more realistic. It was then thinly painted (so you can still see a bit underneath) to give the effect of water splashing and breaking.

Takeaways:
– Don’t make a competition piece your first time doing clear resin
– white glue does not properly seal anything against resin
– do something with large open areas like the cape

Good luck and good job to everyone that entered!

Progress on the commission. I think this is the last of the Frostgrave scatter terrain… and Goblins, now that I think about it.

More progress!

A handful of scatter terrain for Frostgrave. This comes in the form of pieces of a market. Various baskets and bags of food, boxes, bricks, and bottles. I am particularly fond of the apples and squash. Adding different colours makes them interesting to look at.

Night Goblin archers were done. I transferred them onto circle bases to for Age of Sigmar compatibility.

Lastly, the Warboss in Mega-armour. This mini is the Iron Boss from Artel W Collectible Miniatures. A fantastic looking piece with plenty of detail.

The first minis have been painted for this commission.

Naturally painted red to go fasta, these Speed Freeks vehicles are a colourful start to the army.

The two shaman are Orruk Shaman from Age of Sigmar, but I believe they are going to be used as different looking Weirdboyz. I made them different skin colours to help differentiate and because I remember Orks have different skin colours to denote age and size.

I made a thin deck box design. These are two deck boxes with different engravings for the deck I have in each. They hold about 40 sleeved cards, with some room on the sides for a couple tokens. Takes about 30-45 minutes to cut the MDF and engrave the logo and text. I added a couple pairs of magnets to help seal the lid.

Starting off on the Orks. This is not all of them. Probably close to two-thirds. Most of the minis are from Games Workshop and Forgeworld. There are a number that are from Kromlech, like the Meganobz, Mega Boss, and others. Looking forward to be painting such gorgeous models!

My entry for a local GW painting competition. The first time I have done this much NMM in a long time and I feel I have improved since my last effort. I still need to work on having a consistent perception for how the light is supposed to hit the armour, especially when I want additional sources of light to come into play. I guess I will just have to paint more!

I look forward to doing the other two in the same style. Stay tuned.

And that is another commission down! The final model finishes this great force. A mounted goblin warboss.

Lots of fun painting him and the armour squig. A little bit of checkered freehand is put on the goblin and squig, although the squig’s checkers are wearing off.

Almost done the commission! Just 1 model to go.

Today, I have 5 squigs and a Goblin Shaman. The squigs were great, a bit of variety, but very simple to do. The Shaman, like the other characters in the commission, was detailed and had a narrative associated to him. Little mushrooms falling from his hand and all the fetishes on his staff really show that he isn’t just some generic goblin. He’s a goblin that drugged himself up so much he became a wizard.

Just the mounted goblin warboss left!

These were actually done as my last models for 2015, but new year’s postponed the pictures. However, here is the very characterful Grimgor Ironhide and his charming Fanatic buddies.

Grimgor has awesome detail all over him. The handsome fellow has his ear chewed off and well-placed scars.

The Fanatics, if I remember my lore correctly, are goblins in a super drug mushroom-induced frenzy that swing those iron balls wildly until their bodies break apart from the physical strain (or the drug wears off and kills them anyways).
