Finished the first bunch of models for this commission. Pistoleros and Hounds for Malifaux, and 2 Rohan Royal Guard. Good start to a good looking commission!

The cobblestone bases for the Malifaux models are from Secret Weapon Miniatures. I love their look, brings the Malifaux figures together so well.

Yes, I have two commission going at once now. Straight out running since finishing the Firestorm ships.

I have a Zombies and Helbrutes commission. 40 zombies on round bases and 2 Helbrutes with Grey Knight Terminator heads. This is an extension to the Bloodletters and Ezekiel commission I had a little while back.

The other commission is a Lord of the Rings commission. I will be using Viking models as base figures for Rohan warriors. They have some nice bases from Secret Weapon Miniatures and some nice cloaks for the soldiers.

The beginning of the end. There are little more than a dozen models left in this Myth commission.

Today, I submit to you, 3 bosses, a minotaur, 2 heroes, and a dog (which is also a miniboss?)

The bases are from Secret Weapons Miniatures, which, I think, compliment the models very nicely. Even if the bases are quite a bit bigger than what were supplied. The bosses were interesting to paint. The rats each had funny little details to pick out. The brown rat has a little imp thing sitting on its head holding the reigns, and the rat shouldering the smaller rats has a little crown and the pumpkins on the base really added to the theme of “scary rat king”. The bug boss has little grubs spawning out of various orifices.

I added more colours to the minotaur than the concept art (which was all browns), much more interesting to look at. I followed the concept art scheme for the dog, a fun model to paint.

Finally, the heroes. The torch bearer had a nice variety of textures to explore. The treeman/Groot, I painted like a tree. Unfortunately not much colour variety. However, to add a bit of interest to the model, I put autumn leaves in various places on the model. Gives some more narrative to the model. I think I will go back and add some green to the appendages to make them vine-like. That would give a better colour variety.

The first models are completed for prototype colour schemes on the minions. Since they are in blocks of 15-20, it is usually a good idea to to a few test models first before committing to a scheme. The bases are fairly bland as grey, so I will be experimenting with different colours. The base is ripply or wavy, so maybe a khaki, like sand, would work.

I have a commission for Myth, the board game. This was a successful Kickstarter a while back, and now I see it in stores. Too bad I didn’t get in on it, at least I get to paint it! I was sent Secret Weapon Miniatures bases to use on the heroes and bosses for that more unique touch. Other than the bases, the models will be following the colour schemes of their respective art pieces. So many models to paint…I am in heaven.

My Relic Knights are now complete. Iron Chef: Definitely not Solid Snake, and Magnus Leopold, my commander, are done. Group shots coming soon. Like the other models in my army, I gave them the custom base treatment and a good amount of painting time.

I decided to follow the box art for both the models. Iron Chef with the greys and Leopold with the shining armour. This was the first time in a while since I have done a non-metallic effect. I’d say it turned out pretty well.

I have completed more of my Black Diamond force. This batch includes three Suspect 7 and a Sophia Drake.

I tried to loosely follow colour schemes for the skins of Akali from League of Legends. But I think they look more like the ninja women from Mortal Kombat. The one in yellow has a 7 on her clothing, so now she has a soccer jersey haha. All the ninjas have water effects on their bases, making them garden themed.

Sophia Drake looking great. I made her armour more on the warmer side that is complemented by the bricks on her base.

Almost done, just Iron Chef and Leopold to go!

I was merrily strolling around PAX, when I came across the the Soda Pop Miniatures. I was aware of Relic Knights before, but physically seeing them on the table top really sold it for me. That, and they are all plastic. My buddies and I bought into an army each: starter boxes plus another few supplement models. I got Black Diamond, friends got Shattered Sword and Noh Empire. We spent a weekend building our sets.

Since these will always be small armies, I decided to take the bases up a notch. Bases from Secret Weapon Miniatures; custom made bases using balsa wood, urban rubble from Gale Force Nine, and miniature bricks from Secret Weapon. My Suspect 7 and Iron Chef will be given water effects to complete their bases.

Here are a couple test bases for the Khador commission that I am starting. I have been tasked with creating muddy slush bases for the army. I think the lighter base has the churned and slushy feel down quite well, but the snow is not as apparent as the other base.

My recipe for the mud consists of fine sand flock, Forgeworld’s Rust Powder, some drops of Secret Weapon Miniature’s pigment fixer, and a few drops of water effects (black paint as well for the darker base), mixed together. The snow is then added on top while the mixture is on the base, more water effects is added to ensure the snow is adhered to the mud. I am trying out different colours and snows.

The darker base uses a snow flock on top, although it makes the snow more apparent, it is not a realistic as the Crushed Glass variant for the lighter base. I will try a couple more test bases, see if the crushed glass works with the dark colour.

Finished the big Doge, the Feral Warpwolf. He is one scary warbeast. I also filmed myself painting it, so that will be up soon. Now that I’m done classes for the semester, I have all the time in the world to make videos 😀
