While putting together the next batch of Space Marines to paint, I painted up a Solitaire. He’s going to be one of the leaders so I put in more diamonds across the piece.

I painted the orange in first so I can get the proper transitions before painting in the black diamonds. There was some diamonds added to the cloak so it looks like his trail is melding in with the cloth. Similar to the Shadowseer, I put diamonds on the hood, fading to the black.

The wraithbone masonry he’s vaulting over is a bit of a treat. I made sure to add bright highlights all along the runes, especially in the shade so it looks polished. Quite the dynamic looking mini, very striking when you have the bright diamonds and costuming that we all love with the Harlequins.

So close to calling him done. I’ve been working on him for a bit, and only now have gotten to weathering the face paint. I will be toning down the brow sweat before the completed pictures.

Master Class With Mathieu Fontaine June 22, 2017

Over last weekend, I had the opportunity to attend Mathieu Fontaine’s Master Class again in Vancouver. He was here around 5 years ago teaching the same class, but using a GW Ogre model. This time, the class was on the Dark Age Goliath miniature. Unfortunately, the miniature was not casted well with far too much mold release, so the paint wasn’t sticking. But, I got through it.

I chose green skin to do something different. I believe I was the only one in the class to do green (others were blue, purple, human-ish, etc). Purple shading across the skin for the extra pop. A purple glaze on the steel to tie it in with the model. All in all, a very fun class.

A single Space Marine Ironclad Dreadnought done at display standard. I chose Imperial Fist colours because I haven’t done yellow in a long time and it easily stands out. This was also a rare opportunity to use weathering powders and other techniques to make it look like it fit in the scene of destroyed urban streets. This was the first time I got to use my newly acquired stencils, being the street markings on the base.

The chainsaw has copious amounts of gore on it as well as a more-than-subtle splatter effect on the left side of the dreadnought. Almost as if the blood would be mostly on the side when it eviscerates people. The final detail was in the form of a decal on the Hurricane Bolter side denoting “V”. Whatever the viewer may interpret that as.

All in all, I am very pleased with this piece and had lots of fun painting it on stream for my viewers to enjoy. They loved witnessing the process and I loved explaining my steps and thought process to them.

Last year, I attended a painting masterclass with Alfonso “Banshee” Giraldes. This is the bust we all got. Finally got around to finishing it. Using the theory I learned, I only used red, yellow, blue, black, and white for all the colours on this model.

Wildly different from what I am used to, and I loved it. The next bust I’ll do, Tiger Ace Michael Wittmann WW2, will be more outside my comfort zone. Maybe no reds. That’d be interesting.

The mighty Kromac, Champion of the Wurm, brings this commission to a close. At display quality, I did a lot of blend throughout the model. As a neat contrast, I added purple to the shadow tones of his skin. He was a delight to paint.

I finished up 2 of the boss models in this commission. First, we have a Goblin King being carried around by his shield bearers, by Avatars of War. Second, is a Savage Orc Warboss from Games Workshop. I followed colour schemes for both models.

I found it interesting to do an Orc with that much flesh texture. Tattoos are an unusual thing for me to do as well! That was cool. I loved doing different skin tones for the Orc and Goblin. I think it adds to their character.

Lorgar, Primarch of the Word Bearers November 25, 2015

My first Primarch model is done! Lorgar, Primarch of the Word Bearers Space Marine legion. A Horus Heresy character model from Forgeworld. Incredibly good looking model. Tons of detail all over.

Lots of blending done all over the model. I followed the scheme on the Forgeworld website. I also did some NMM on the cloak boarder. For the first time, I added bronze to the skin tone colour. In the novels, Lorgar is described to have bronze skin, metallic even, like the Emperor. I added in the metallic to the skin tone and painted it as normal. Subtle difference, but I think it turned out well.

Next, I want Horus, Mortarion, or Konrad.

Here is the character addition to the unit of horsemen. Eorl the Young. He would have been the final piece of the commission, but some fixes and additions have been placed. I will be changing the colours of the shields to green and white like the Helmingas and removing the free hand.

I did Eorl to a display standard, lots of blending and I added some freehand. I put a horse icon onto his flag. I didn’t want to make the horse a brighter grey because I thought it would blend into the cape too much.

Totally forgot to post pictures of the assembled models before I started painting. Unfortunately, the Aquan Prime dreadnought is missing the piece that attaches the ship to the rods, so I am waiting for that to come in. However, the two defence groups are assembled and the Syndicate battlegroup is stripped, all ready to get painted. The Oroshan Imperium group has already been painted.

I went for a more saturated colour scheme for the Oroshan because I wanted them to have a more lively feel. Besides, reading the lore, the Oroshan have many varieties of hair colours and I imagine them to look like humanoid lions without snouts and noses. The box colour scheme is purple and a sickly yellow look. I went for a lion’s mane or healthy savannah grass kind of yellow and kept the purple bits.

If the Oroshan ships look front-heavy, that’s because they are. Very much so. Particularly the dreadnought. It sits well in the pictures though!

Also, I got new photo backdrops. Love the look of them. Really a step up from the improvised two-piece black one I had. I only got these 2 colours, but I think they will do for now.
